1 | The Magician
“Magick is the science and art of causing change in conformity with one's will.”
-Aleister Crowley
The Magician is card number 1 in the Tarot’s Major Arcana. In numerology, 1 is the number of creation and the birth of all things, the divine origin of the universe. Rooted in opportunity, a symbol of confidence, power, and action.
The Magician invites us to step into the role of becoming the co-creators of our own worlds by connecting us with our aspirations and teaching the discipline needed to convert energy into matter. Training the fool how to create his inner world and from it the outer will follow, after all, as above, so below. As a master manifester, The Magician brings the tools, resources, and energy needed: wands (fire), pentacles (earth), swords (air), and cups (water) to manifest desires into reality.
General meaning- Manifestation, confidence, resourcefulness, power, & inspiration
When out of alignment- Manipulation, untapped talent, illusion, trickster, & holding yourself back
Navigating The Magician’s archetypal energy:
Recognizing that everything is made of energy and vibration empowers us and gives room for play by allowing us to step into the role of becoming the co-creators of our realities. We all have the ability to create intentional change in our lives by tuning into the frequency of the energy we want to align with. By using the resources of what’s at hand and focusing your energy in a light, curious, and playful way, the sky is the limit as to what can be achieved.
The biggest obstacle in the path of any magician is believing in yourself and your magick. To help overcome this hurdle, you have to recognize and work on your sphere of influence. To do this, start by thinking back to a time when you got something you really wanted and how good it felt. Upon getting this thing, you may have even said to yourself, “Yes! I knew this was going to happen!” Reflecting on this energy is a wonderful way to strengthen your sphere of influence of what you believe is possible on a deeper level. You can play with this energy to help you grow and manifest things you’d like but believe are out of your reach. To do this, allow yourself to have fun and set the intention to find quarters / four-leaf clovers/ the perfect parking spot / whatever feels somewhat small but exciting to you, and then do your best to release your attachment to the desire and have faith that it will happen in its own divine timing. And then when it does happen, be sure to give it your full attention and allow yourself to feel really grateful for it, after allowing this energy to sink in and feel significant to you, ask for another! Once you’ve tuned into believing in your own magick, your sphere of influence grows, and you can ask for bigger things with much more confidence. For a particularly favorable outcome, I find using the following phrase particularly helpful: “I ask for this in my highest good of all, in a fun, easy, and relaxed manner. Hear my words, attend to me, as I will so mote it be, blessed be.”
In this card, we see our magician perched on a rock, demonstrating how to play with energy as she effortlessly casts purple light. She’s surrounded by a beautiful garden on a gorgeous day, wand in hand, and an infinity symbol overhead showing her connection with the divine and proof of her magical abilities to create abundance and beauty around her. On the four corners of this card, we see all four suits represented (wands, cups, pentacles, & swords), showing her mastery and ease of working with whatever element is present. This magician is a wonderful first teacher on our spiritual journey through the Major Arcana.
